  To The Stars

Excerpt

The conversation that had been taking place continued, and Collin kept his arm around me as he threw himself into it. I tried to do the same.
Five minutes later I was still attempting to understand what was happening—or happened. All I understood so far was that the men were all talking about an old case.
“Still can’t believe the bastard got away with first-degree murder,” one of the men said, and the others all shook their heads and voiced their displeasure.
“Should’ve been capital murder,” Flynn Doherty added.
“What’s the difference?” I asked quietly, and regretted it when a few men laughed, and every pair of eyes in the small group focused on me.
Collin laughed softly and mumbled, “Excuse us for a few minutes. I haven’t had much alone time with my new fiancΓ©e.” His hand gripped mine as he practically tugged me across the floor to a corner that wasn’t as busy.
“I can’t walk that fast in these—”
He turned so his face was directly in front of mine, and though his mouth was curved up in a smile, there was something different about it. About him. “Are you fucking kidding me, Harlow?” he hissed.
My eyebrows rose in confusion. “Wait, wha—” My question was cut off when Collin released my hand, only for two of his fingers to dig into a spot on my wrist. The pain was instant and surprising. My mouth popped back open, whether to let out a cry of pain or demand why he was doing this, I didn’t know—but it didn’t matter, he spoke before I could.
“Do not show your pain, Harlow.”
“What?” I asked breathlessly, and gave him a panicked look. “Co—”
“Do not show your pain,” he repeated. His tone was soft, his face still carefully composed. If I weren’t the one on the receiving end of the pain, I would’ve been so sure we were flirting instead, from the look he was giving me. “You know how stupid you are, don’t you?”
Stupid? I thought lamely. The question would have frustrated me if I weren’t trying to keep a straight face while simultaneously wondering how two fingers could cause so much pain. “Wh—”
“You will never embarrass me in front of anyone like that again, and especially not my father or his colleagues. Do you understand?” Collin leaned close and brushed his lips across my neck to whisper, “Do not say another word for the rest of the night.” The words were emphasized by a relief so great it almost felt like the pain had worsened for a split second when he released my wrist. It was clear his words weren’t just a demand—they were a warning.
I never once would have considered myself stupid before … but now I wasn’t sure if I was for obeying his demand the way I did for the rest of the night.

Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

All hail to the queen of angst  Ms Molly McAdams!!!!

Holy Moly.....I feel utterly drained yet elated at the same time as this book really does put the characters through the ringer as well as reader..I was totally into this story from the beginning and as a woman PMSing I really felt emotional throughout this book and really empathised with Harlow all the way to the gritty end....

The book features quite hellish domestic abuse throughout the book and I loved how Harlow's character remained strong and her character was in no way belittled as the victim of abuse and her thought process throughout this book were valid reasons to remain in the relationship.

The book was written well with such sensitivity to the subject and characters and I cannot fault any part of this story, it was un put downable and I had to finish it in one sitting...

I felt that even though this was a love story for Harlow and her lost love, Knox the author told a brilliant story of strength and character and the sweet everlasting love that can survive time and circumstance. Not to put a downer on the hero but to me he was not the main focus of this book in my eyes it was Harlow's journey and Knox is just an added bonus.

As usual this book took some processing and it was a long time before the feelings left me after finishing this book...Amazing read yet again

Author PhotoAbout Molly McAdams: Molly grew up in California but now lives in the oh-so-amazing state of Texas with her husband, daughter, and fur babies. When she’s not diving into the world of her characters, some of her hobbies include hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and long walks on the beach … which roughly translates to being a homebody with her hubby and dishing out movie quotes. She has a weakness for crude-humored movies and fried pickles, and loves curling up in a fluffy comforter during a thunderstorm … or under one in a bathtub if there are tornados. That way she can pretend they aren’t really happening.

seductionteaser1   Max jumped onto the couch and held up his hands. “Before you do this, remember, our mother has a Jesus sticker on her car. What would she say?” “Must you bring her into everything?” Reid roared, stopping in front of the couch, chest heaving. Max shrugged. “It’s not my fault I’m her favorite son.” “Says who?” “Mom. This morning.” “Was this before or after you added vodka to her coffee and slipped her a pill?” Max gasped. Becca made her way around the brothers and motioned for me to walk with her toward the kitchen. No words were spoken. She simply popped the cork from the wine bottle and poured what looked like three servings into a glass and slid it toward me. “Believe me, it helps.” I took the glass and sipped while she drank straight from the bottle. “Does he ever . . . stop being . . . Max?” I asked. “Curious minds want to know.” Max jumped off the couch, and naturally he made his own swish sound effect before landing on his feet, thrusting his hands into the air, and turning toward Reid. “I’ve been her favorite ever since I won at gymnastics.” “You don’t win at gymnastics,” Reid said through clenched teeth. “You get scored.” “Perfect ten.” Max winked back at us, then covered his mouth and said, “Zero,” while pointing to Reid. “We were six!” Reid argued. “Dude!” Max held up his hands. “I’m just saying, it’s not your fault you’re not the favorite. Let it go, man, just like Rose let go of Jack.” “Who’s Jack?” I whispered. Becca choked on her wine. “Oh, well, uh, last year Reid had a momentary breakdown because of Max peer pressuring me to shoot Reid in the ass with a tranq gun . . . he spent an hour singing ‘My Heart Will Go On.’” I winced. “Off-key.” “Damn you!” Reid turned on his heel and thrust his finger in our direction. “What did I ever do to you!” I think he was talking to Becca. “I hit on you once, one time—” “—thrice.” Max coughed. “And the only reason was so that I could get back at this one.” He jerked his hand back to Max, nearly hitting him in the face. “Because he told Grandma the lock on my door was broken. I was taken advantage of!” “Well, it was!” Max rolled his eyes. “Because you took a sledgehammer to it, you bastard!” Max grinned. “Guilty.” Honestly, I wasn’t sure what they were talking about. So I did what any sane girl would do. I drank. And when my glass was nearly empty, Becca very kindly refilled it while Reid and Max continued pacing around the living room. “You think if we chant fight, they’ll take their shirts off?” Becca asked. I eyed Reid’s near perfect physique. “One can only hope.” “Dirty girls,” Max shouted. “Both of you! Jezebel! I won’t have you poisoning her mind!” “Oh, please.” I rolled my eyes. “And stop calling me a whore!” “Term of endearment when Max says it.” Becca patted my hand. “Next time just say thank you. It’s easier that way.” I glanced back at the guys just in time to see Reid launch himself at Max, hands wrapped tightly around his neck, holding him against the couch while Max screamed. “Help, help!” “We should probably intervene.” Becca took a long sip of wine and set her glass down on the table, then yawned. “Yeah.” Max started turning purple. “We probably should. What do you normally do? Take off your top? Blow a whistle? Call the cops?” “Cops refuse to come when Emorys call—believe me, it’s like the whole McDonald’s thing. Public service refuses to help them now.” “Makes sense.” Max made a choking noise while he tried to kick Reid in the shin. “Oh, well.” Becca walked slowly toward the guys. I followed. I expected her to gently ask them to stop fighting and separate them. Instead, she punched Reid in the face and then separated them. He stumbled back. I caught him and fell backward against the other couch while he rubbed his face and whispered, “My hero.” “My lungs broke your fall,” I wheezed. Max gasped for air. “You know my biggest fear is not breathing!” “Not breathing?” I had to ask, I just had to. Reid chuckled. “For six years Max was convinced every food was going to cause him to go into anaphylactic shock because Oprah did a segment where some chick nearly died after eating a kiwi!” “A kiwi!” Max repeated hoarsely. “Who dies from kiwi? That chick.” He shook his head vigorously. “I refuse to go down eating.” Reid moved off me and sat back on the couch. “He took Benadryl every time he ate fruit.” Max narrowed his eyes. “Make fun now, but we both know that watermelon gave me hives! My throat closed, you bastard!” “Maybe if you took smaller bites . . .” Reid said helpfully. Max lunged again. Becca grabbed him by the shirt and tugged him back onto his own couch. “No more fighting, we have engagement pictures tomorrow.”   seductionbanner1         a Rafflecopter giveaway   rachelborderRachel Van Dyken is the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today Bestselling author of regency and contemporary romances. Contemporary Romance
Released: February 9, 2016
synopsis
My first memory was of a slap, hard across the face: the sting on my cheek and the jarring of my bones as I slammed back into my bed. It was my dad who had hit me.
I had been four.
Most of my memories were much of the same and no one ever saw, no one ever fought to help, no one ever cared.
Then we moved.
My new neighbor cared, rescued the twelve-year-old I had been from a beating. Always thought I'd suffer the nightmare alone, I was wrong.
Mace Donati saved me that day in all the ways a person could be saved.
And his daughter, Mia, she became the friend I had always wanted, my conscience when my own faltered, the light that led me home when I had lost my way.
The girl who grew into the only woman I would ever love.
But when you realize you're more like your father than the good people who took you in and gave you a home, the only way to return their kindness is to let them go.
I let them go, got so far lost in the shadows I couldn't remember who I was anymore. Mia never gave up on me. She fought for me, kept the light on so I'd find my way back.
And when I did, life threw us a curveball. I had to hurt Mia in order to save her.
But when my past comes back to haunt me and I almost lose her, I'm ready to fight for her...fight to find a way back into her heart while keeping the demons from my past from finishing what they started.
